How to Use This Guide

This book is written for people who carry responsibility for liquid-cooled AI data centers but do not necessarily design them. If you are a risk officer, an insurance underwriter, or an operations manager, you do not need to know how to size a heat exchanger. You need to know what can go wrong, how fast it can go wrong, what it will cost, and what a well-run facility does about it.

The subject is serious. A modern AI rack can hold several million dollars of processors, memory, and networking gear. Put water, glycol, oil, or boiling chemical fluid next to that equipment, and you have created a new kind of risk. The failures are fast. The losses are large. And many organizations have never written down a plan for them.

This book does not try to scare you for the sake of it. The fear is real, but it is useful only if it turns into action. Every chapter ends with something you can do.

What You Will Find Inside

The book has five parts. Part I explains the technology in plain English and catalogues the ways it fails. Part II looks at the fluids themselves: water and glycol for direct-to-chip systems, single-phase dielectric fluids, and two-phase dielectric fluids. Part III covers how to detect problems early, contain them, and monitor the system. Part IV contains step-by-step playbooks, including what to do when a facility loop pump fails in the middle of a training run. Part V turns all of this into numbers, insurance conversations, and a 90-day action plan.

How to Read It

If you are a risk officer, read Chapters 1, 3, 14, and 16 first, then return to the rest.

If you are an insurance underwriter, start with Chapters 1, 3, 7, 14, and 15. Chapter 15 describes the evidence package an operator should be able to hand you.

If you are an operations manager, read Chapters 8 through 13 closely. They contain the playbooks and checklists you will use on a bad night.

A Note on Numbers and Advice

Numbers in this book are illustrative. They show how to think, not what your site will experience. Your equipment, your fluids, and your design are specific to you. Always confirm figures with your equipment manufacturers, your fluid supplier’s safety data sheets, your engineers, and your insurance broker.

This book is general information. It is not engineering, legal, or insurance advice for any specific facility.

A Plain Promise

Technical words are explained the first time they appear. A glossary at the back collects them all. If a sentence in this book needs an engineering degree to understand, that is the author’s fault, not yours.
